Community

What does Start with Heart mean?

The heart points us toward wisdom, compassion, and understanding. When we listen with our heart, we learn what really matters. To us, it’s helping the people and businesses of our community thrive. It’s serving. Being generous. Caring for each other. And giving you every opportunity to reach your goals. When a bank and a community both start with heart, amazing things can happen. As a mutual bank, we don’t have shareholders; instead, we pay our dividends to the community. We like to say that we make money so that we can give it away, which is why we are heavily invested in serving through charitable donations and volunteerism. Since our start in 1891, we’ve been a reliable, engaged, and compassionate community partner. We know that our employees, customers, and communities grow stronger when we work together, look out for one another, care for each other, and start with heart.

Our support often comes in the form of monetary donations, but our employees also serve in various leadership roles on non-profit boards and have accumulated a large number of volunteer hours at dozens of local events and initiatives.

In 2023 we as a Bank gave a total of:
  • $535,000 in charitable contributions to organizations located and around the communities we serve
  • Our employees volunteered more than 5,600 hours
The Boston Globe has named us one of the top 100 Workplaces in Massachusetts for several years and we have been voted Haverhill's #1 Community Bank for several consecutive years. We are proud to hold up our commitment to the community with the generosity of time, money and involvement.
